Christmas Shoppers from Faroe Islands Land at Port of Tyne

Around 800 christmas shoppers from the Faroe Islands landed at Port of Tyne yesterday bringing a welcome boost to trade in the local economy.

The Faroe Islands lies 400 miles North of Newcastle between the Norwegian Sea and North Atlantic Ocean. This is the fourth year that the Faroe Islands to Newcastle mini-cruise on the Norröna has been organised by Smyrill Line.

This year the christmas mini-cruise has brought a record 800 Faroese christmas shoppers to the Port of Tyne and will be most welcomed by shops, bars and restaurants in the local area.

Andrew Moffat, chief executive officer for Port of Tyne, said: “We have welcomed a record number of cruise and ferry passengers this year, almost doubling the passenger numbers and cruise calls.

“It’s good to see the Norröna return, as the very last cruise of the year, and I hope that passengers enjoy their visit and that the shops, bars, restaurants and clubs feel the benefit of this extra business in the run-up to Christmas.”
